What Great News!
Italy will have a new excellence: the new data center of the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) with one of the ten most powerful supercomputers in the world.
Based at the Bologna Technopole, it will process data from satellites, ground stations, marine buoys, airplanes and ships from all over the world and provide weather forecasts to all European member countries, key information for national weather services and for civil protection.
As well as improving the accuracy of forecasts, the ECMWF said the Centre’s current supercomputing capability will improve by a factor of five, and will facilitate work into the field of machine learning for numerical weather prediction will also be facilitated.
ThermoKey at the service of Big Data
In addition to the European Weather Center, the 120 thousand square meters campus, redeveloped from unused buildings and grounds of the former Manifattura Tabacchi (a tobacco factory) in Bologna, will host some of the major European excellences in the sector: the European supercomputer Leonardo, the Agenzia Italia Meteo, the National Institute of Astrophysics, research, university branches and common areas for R&D startups.
This international hub of Big Data, digital and new technologies, will concentrate 80% of the national supercomputing capacity and 20% of the European one.
The facility includes solar panels to provide renewable power and cooling systems that use a mixture of groundwater cooling and dry coolers.
ThermoKey is extremely proud to participate with our cooling solutions.
